Radiohead have done it. The Charlatens are about to do it. Many other artists have done it yet fall under the radar and don't get the same press. One such artist is the up and coming Chris Singleton. His website is designed like a virtual mixtape, complete with cassette graphics to remind you of where all this file-sharing started in the first place. His album is gusty singer-songwriter fare and well worth your attention. Well, it's free. Radiohead have made a decent amount of money from this concept but it was thought only artists as established as Radiohead could do it. There are plenty of stories on the web now however of up and comming artists using it to broaden their fanbase. Good words travel fast, it's a great way for a new act to keep control of their own destiny without getting into bed with 'the man'. Details of Chris Singleton's album can be found here.
